About the program

This program helps to improve your reading, writing, math, computer and other basic skills.

You'll work with a service provider to put together a learning plan that will help you meet your goals of further education, apprenticeship, employment or greater self-confidence.

Colleges may refer to this program as "academic upgrading".

You can take the program in English or French. There is also training available to meet the specific needs of Indigenous people and Deaf people (training delivered in American Sign Language and English).

Program length

  • The time you spend in the literacy and basic skills course will vary based on your goals. You can stay in the program for as long as you need to finish the course.

Eligibility

You must be a resident of Ontario and at least 18 years old.

This program is for people who have reading, writing and math skills below the grade 12 level. Your Employment Ontario service provider will assess your level at the intake appointment.

Your service provider may ask for additional requirements.

This program might be good for you if you:

  • want to improve your reading, writing, math, computer and other basic skills
  • did not finish high school and want to prepare to go back to school
  • want to develop skills for better work opportunities including apprenticeship
  • want to develop skills to feel more confident in your everyday life

This program is free.

Contact your Employment Ontario service provider if you have questions about additional support such as financial help with transportation, child care services or other needs.

How to register

  1. Request an appointment with your preferred service provider to discuss your goals and needs.
  2. Take an assessment with the service provider to evaluate your skills and knowledge.
  3. Based on your assessment results, develop a learning plan with your service provider to help you reach your goals.
