Overview
The needs-based Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is changing the way many autism services are delivered. With more funding going directly to families for core clinical services, the demand for clinicians continues to rise, and the sector is adapting to offer a broader range of flexible and individualized services in an open market.
The workforce capacity fund gives grants to service providers and community organizations to help address challenges and transition to delivering service within the needs-based program.
The workforce capacity fund provides grants in two funding streams:
- Service provider expansion stream: provides direct financial support to help children’s service providers expand their internal capacity to deliver OAP clinical services to more children. This stream provides 12-month grants ranging from $25,000 to $200,000 in value.
- Sector innovation stream: supports capacity-building projects that can lead to system-wide change and innovation at the community, regional or provincial level. This stream provides 12-month grants ranging from $25,000 to $300,000 in value.
The move to core clinical services may pose unique challenges for families and service providers, particularly those in northern, rural and remote communities, as well as francophone and Indigenous families. As a result, we prioritize applications for the fund that aim to support these communities and families.
We sought applications for the fund in three rounds:
- summer 2021 – closed - application period ran from August 10, 2021, to September 19, 2021
- summer 2022 – closed - application period ran from August 22, 2022, to October 27, 2022
- summer 2023 – closed - application period ran from August 29, 2023, to October 26, 2023
The fund is one initiative under the OAP capacity action plan.

The 2023 application period is now closed. The deadline to apply was October 26, 2023.
What happens after you apply
We are evaluating the applications we received, and we will notify successful and unsuccessful applicants in writing in early 2024.
Successful applicants must negotiate and enter into a service agreement with the province to receive funding.
