Executive summary

Ontario Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12: Policy and Program Requirements, 2016 sets out Ontario’s requirements for the policies and programs of all publicly-funded elementary and secondary schools in Ontario.

This document consolidates the broad range of policies and programs that affect the educational experience of students in Ontario schools from kindergarten to Grade 12. It provides links to legislation, regulations, policy/program memoranda, policy documents and other Ontario web pages.

Updates to OS: Grade 9 courses

As part of its efforts to ensure all students can reach their full potential, beginning in September 2022, all Grade 9 subjects will be offered in one stream. This includes the new de-streamed Grade 9 Mathematics course (MTH1W) that was implemented in September 2021 and a new de-streamed Science, Grade 9 course (SNC1W) that will be issued in Spring 2022 and will be available for educators and parents on the Curriculum and Resources website. This course will replace Science, Grade 9, Academic (SNC1D) and Science, Grade 9, Applied (SNC1P).

Grade 9 English, Issues in Canadian Geography, and French as a Second Language courses will be offered using the Academic courses and course codes for the 2022-23 school year.

All other subjects are currently offered in one stream in Grade 9. The current courses, course codes, and course descriptions are to continue to be used for the 2022-23 school year.

Supersedes 2011 edition

This document supersedes the 2011 edition of Ontario Schools. It is an update of that edition, reflecting all changes and developments in policy and programs (including the release of updated policy or program documents) that have occurred in the intervening years.
