Overview

Livestock community sales in Ontario are licensed livestock facilities that allow cattle, sheep, goats, horses and swine to be sold by public auction.

Licensing, regulations and inspections

The Livestock Community Sales Act and Ontario Regulation 729 allow for the licensing of livestock auctions where farmers can sell their animals in Ontario by public auction. Regulated livestock auctions provide a transparent and competitive marketplace, ensuring fair prices for both sellers and buyers.

Legislation exists to ensure:

  • an orderly market
  • disease control
  • humane handling of livestock
  • financial stability of licensed operators

Veterinarians and Animal Health and Welfare Officers are appointed under the Act and regulations to establish an inspection system. They ensure compliance with the legislation by:

  • examining livestock that appear to be diseased, injured, or abnormal
  • inspecting facilities for cleanliness and
  • monitoring livestock handling techniques
