Project summary

The proposed work on the Shawmere Anorthosite project is a mechanized stripping and a bulk sampling program. To not qualify as advanced exploration, the bulk sample must be less than 1000 tonnes. The proposed area for the bulk sampling is accessible by light truck.

The proponent is a privately held exploration stage mineral company engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of anorthosite mineral properties located near the town of Foleyet in Northern Ontario.

The company holds a 100% interest in 614 single cell mining claims within the Shawmere Anorthosite Complex, covering 13,198.45 hectares.

The bulk sampling could be carried out in a variety of ways, including:

  • A blast contractor could be brought in. The track mounted remote controlled drilling rigs will drill holes for blasting materials and then the area could be blasted. This would be the fastest and easiest method from a labour perspective and would also allow for a small footprint. This is the preferred method.
  • Areas could be selected and mechanically stripped (if required). Then personnel could run channel samples approximately 6 feet to 8 feet deep and 3 feet wide and chip out materials until sufficient quantity has been obtained. This would be less cost effective and more labor intensive.

Notice of opportunity to provide input on a category B project

We invite you to comment on the Shawmere Project. The proposed exploration activities have been screened as a category B project. The undertaking is being carried out in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Activities of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines under the Mining Act (amended 2018).

We have identified several environmental effects associated with the undertaking. A summary of negative environmental effects and proposed mitigation measures that would negate or reduce their significance is provided in the project description, which you can find with the supporting material for this project on the Environmental Registry of Ontario.

We invite you to provide input and express any concerns about this proposed project. For more information or to submit comments, visit the posting for this project on the Environmental Registry of Ontario or contact:

Statement of completion for a category B project (2023)

The Ministry of Mines (MINES) has completed the project documentation for the proposed Shawmere Project. It is located about 100 kilometres west of Timmins and 90 kilometres northeast of Chapleau in the Porcupine Mining District of Ontario. It includes Carty Township, the southeastern part of Lemoine Township, and small parts of Oates, Foleyet and Ivanhoe Township.

The proposed work program on the Shawmere Anorthosite project would be a mechanized stripping and bulk sampling program. To not qualify as advanced exploration, the bulk sample would be less than 1000 tonnes.

This undertaking has been assessed as a Category B, in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Ministry of Northern Development and Mines Activities under the Mining Act (Class EA) (PDF).

The ministry notified government agencies and other interested persons about the project on September 8, 2023. Indigenous communities were also consulted on the permitting process (ERO 019-7621). In addition, a notice of opportunity to provide input was posted as a bulletin notice on the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO 019-7574) and referenced on the MINES Class EA webpage. The notice was supported with a description of the project that included a summary of potential negative environmental effects associated with the undertaking and proposed mitigation measures that would negate or reduce the significance of the environmental effects. All parties consulted were provided opportunity to provide input and express concerns related to the project over a 30 day comment period.

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks’ Environmental Assessment Branch advised on September 18, 2023, that the updated (August 2022) Areas of Interest document provides guidance regarding the ministry’s interests with respect to the Class EA process. All areas of interest were addressed in the EA documentation at an appropriate level for the EA study. Proponents who address all the applicable areas of interest can minimize potential delays to the project schedule. Further information is provided at the end of the Areas of Interest document relating to recent changes to the Environmental Assessment Act through Bill 197, COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act, 2020.

The Ministry of Citizen and Multiculturalism provided comment on October 11, 2023, relating to its mandate of conserving Ontario’s cultural heritage, which includes:

  • archaeological resources, including land and marine
  • built heritage resources, including bridges and monuments
  • cultural heritage landscapes

Contact with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Chapleau-Wawa work centre was requested on October 11, 2023 to discuss the project. We followed up with the work centre on October 19, 2023. An email was received on October 19, 2023. The Chapleau-Wawa work centre does not have any comments or concerns at this time.

No other comments were received by any interested parties or stakeholders. We will implement the project as described in the project documentation.
