About gender-based violence

Gender-based violence is violence perpetrated based on someone’s gender and/or unequal power dynamics. It can include physical, economic, sexual and/or emotional/psychological abuse.   Women in Canada are three times more likely than men to experience gender-based violence.  According to Statistics Canada, self-reported data collected in 2018 shows that 44% of women reported experiencing some form of intimate partner violence in their lifetime (since the age of 15).

National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence

In November 2023, Ontario announced an agreement with the Government of Canada for $162 million over four years to support the implementation of the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence. This is in addition to Ontario’s projected investment of  $1.4 billion during the life of the agreement in services that help address and prevent gender-based violence.

These investments will allow the Ontario government to strengthen its focus on prevention, collaboration, and integration across sectors to help address the root causes of gender-based violence and improve longer-term outcomes for survivors and their families.
