The Specialized Professional Services (SPS) Unit provides technical support and expertise to Ministry of Labour regional staff in the industrial, construction, mining and health care programs.

The SPS provides services in five key areas:

  1. ergonomics
  2. occupational hygiene
  3. engineering
  4. radiation protection
  5. emergency management.

The SPS’s key responsibilities include:

  • enforcing occupational hygiene, safety and ergonomics in workplaces
  • providing expert professional advice on engineering, occupational hygiene, radiation protection and ergonomics for the ministry’s enforcement activities
  • developing guidelines and best-practices documents in partnership with health and safety associations (HSAs) and other professional organizations pertaining to risks associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), occupational disease and exposure to complex machinery and equipment, chemicals and radiation
  • contributing to the development of standards, guidelines, regulations, codes of practice and operating policies.
