The Registry Act and The Land Titles Act provide that every land registry office must be kept open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., except on holidays when they shall be closed.

A "holiday" is defined in those Acts to mean,

  1. Saturday
  2. Sunday
  3. a day that is a holiday for civil servants as prescribed by the regulations under The Public Service Act.

The regulations under The Public Service Act, O. Reg. 749 of R.R.O. 1970 and O. Reg. 1013/75, set out the following:

  1. An employee is entitled to a holiday in each year on each of the following days:
    • New Year’s Day
    • Good Friday
    • Easter Monday
    • Victoria Day
    • Dominion Day
    • Civic Holiday, which is the 1st Monday in August
    • Labour Day
    • Thanksgiving Day
    • Remembrance Day
    • Christmas Day
    • Boxing Day
    • Any special holiday proclaimed by Governor General or the Lieutenant - Governor.
  2. When a holiday specified above falls on a Saturday or Sunday, or when any two of them fall on a successive Saturday and Sunday, the regular working day or days next following is a holiday or are holidays, as the case may be, in lieu thereof, but when such next following regular working day is also a holiday, the next regular working day thereafter is in lieu thereof a holiday.
    Chapter 225 provides that where the time limited for a proceeding or for the doing of anything in a land registry office expires or falls upon a day that is prescribed as a holiday, the time so limited extends to and the thing may be done on the day next following that is not a holiday.
