Notice to the Profession

Names of the Ontario Court (General Division) and Ontario Court (Provincial Division) Change April 19, 1999

On Apri/19, 1999, Part IV of the Courts Improvement Act, 1996, S.O. c. 25, 1996, will be proclaimed in force.
On that date:

  • the Ontario Court (General Division) will be renamed the Superior Court of Justice;
  • the Ontario Court (Provincial Division) will be renamed the Ontario Court of Justice;
  • judges in the renamed Ontario Court of Justice will be addressed as Justice. Justices in the renamed Superior Court of Justice will continue to be addressed as Justice;
  • the jurisdiction of the courts will not change; and
  • there is no change to the name of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

In accordance with the legislation, the current court names in printed court forms, or in court seals, can continue to be used until April 18, 2000. This grace period will enable law stationers, law firms and other users of court services time to use up existing supplies of forms, to revise the forms with the new names on reprinting, and to change existing software.
