Amending O. Reg. 406/00

(Rules of Vintners Quality Alliance Ontario under Clauses 5 (1) (a), (b) and (c) of the Act Relating to Terms, Descriptions and Designations for VQA Wine)

1. Paragraphs 2 and 3 of section 5 of Ontario Regulation 406/00 are revoked and the following substituted:

2. A bottle shall have,

i. a solid cylindrical closure, inserted in the neck of the bottle, that is made of,

A. natural cork,

B. natural pore-filled cork, filled with resin or dust,

C. cork composite with natural cork disc or discs,

D. cork composite, either particle or agglomerate, or

E. 100 per cent synthetic material, or

ii. a screwcap that preserves the quality of the wine.

3. Despite paragraph 2, a traditional T-shaped stopper may be used as a closure for bottles of fortified wine and liqueur wine.

2. (1) Table 2 of the Regulation is amended by striking out “The wine shall have an actual alcoholic content not less than 8.5% and not greater than 14.9% by volume” in Column 2 opposite subheading “1. Wine or Table Wine” under the heading “Wine Categories” in Column 1 and substituting “The wine shall have an actual alcoholic content not less than 7.0% and not greater than 14.9% by volume”.

(2) Table 2 of the Regulation is amended by striking out “The wine shall have an actual alcoholic content not less than 7.5% and not greater than 14.9% by volume” in Column 2 opposite subheading “2. Icewine” and “3. Botrytized Wine” under the heading “Wine Categories” in Column 1 and substituting in each case “The wine shall have an actual alchoholic content not less than 7.0% and not greater than 14.9% by volume”.

(3) Table 2 of the Regulation is amended by striking out “The wine shall have an actual alcoholic content not less than 8.5% and not greater than 14.9% by volume” in Column 2 opposite, subheadings, “5. Late Harvest Wine”, “6. Select Late Harvest Wine”, “7. Special Select Late Harvest Wine”, “8. Vin du Curé”, “9. Nouveau Red”, “10. Blanc De Noirs” and “13. Sparkling Wine” under the heading “Wine Categories” in Column 1 and substituting in each case “The wine shall have an actual alcoholic content not less than 7.0% and not greater than 14.9% by volume”.

3. Appendix A to the Regulation is revoked and the following substituted:
