Overview

The American elk is one of 4 members of the deer family (cervids) living in Ontario. Elk benefit Ontario because they:

  • are an important part of our biodiversity and healthy ecosystems
  • provide recreation opportunities in the form of hunting and viewing
  • provide economic benefits through tourism

In the late 1800s, native elk were made regionally extinct in Ontario due to unregulated hunting and habitat loss. From 1998 to 2001, we worked with local and provincial partners to reintroduce elk to 4 separate locations across the province:

  • Bancroft-North Hastings
  • Nipissing-French River
  • Lake Huron North Shore
  • Lake of the Woods

The restoration of elk to Ontario is a significant achievement and represents an important contribution to Ontario’s biodiversity.
