Environmental Assessment

The Town of Kearney and the Township of Perry have received approval to construct and operate a landfill in the Town of Kearney. As this EA was prepared and submitted in March 1997, prior to the amendments made to the Environmental Assessment Act, it is only partially subject to the new Act and therefore there were no requirements for a Terms of Reference to be prepared or approved. The original Waste Management Master Plan study was undertaken by three municipalities (Kearney, Perry and McMurrich), however, McMurrich has since withdrawn from the proposal. The purpose of this undertaking is to provide waste disposal services with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes to serve the 25-year need of the Town of Kearney and the Township of Perry, as the current landfill sites for these municipalities have reached their approved capacity. The government review of the environmental assessment concluded that the EA had met all of the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act, and approval was granted by Cabinet on March 1, 2000.
