Executive summary

The Agricultural Erosion Control Structures — A Design and Construction Manual, Publication 832, assists contractors in the selection, design, installation and maintenance of agricultural soil erosion control systems. It deals with the types and causes of agricultural erosion as well as the design, installation and maintenance of structures to control water-induced erosion.

The manual appendices also include:

  • more common and traditional techniques and practices associated with structural soil erosion control
  • an introduction and basic information on more progressive and innovative opportunities (such as soil bioengineering and other soft streambank erosion solutions)
  • detailed technical information related to floodwater storage

Design information sheets

The manual includes the following design information sheets to assist in the planning and design of common agricultural erosion control structures:

AgErosion and information for engineers

There is also a complimentary software package called AgErosion that helps automate the design processes outlined in Publicaton 832. This OMAFRA-developed software is available to registered professional engineers or those who have successfully completed the Agricultural Erosion Control Structures Training Course and received the Certificate of Completion.

This manual provides guidelines to contractors who install agricultural soil erosion control works. Although it may serve as a useful guide to engineers, it wasn't prepared as a basic engineering manual on erosion control. No attempt has been made to supply all basic theory and information. All technical information developed in the manual is based on Ontario conditions.
