Renewal requirements

Your limited system certificate expires every 3 years. The Ontario Water Wastewater Certification Office (OWWCO) will send you a renewal reminder 3 months prior to the expiry date. To renew, you must have met the following educational and training requirements since your last renewal.

Complete the mandatory renewal course

Whether you operate a limited groundwater or limited surface water subsystem, you must take a course called Diligence in Drinking Water Operations, to renew your certificate. The Walkerton Clean Water Centre offers it on behalf of the ministry. You can take it by correspondence or in the classroom.

Complete 21 hours of Director approved continuing education

The mandatory renewal course counts as 7 hours of the total continuing education requirement. Check the Director approved course listing at www.owwco.ca. One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) counts as 10 hours of Director approved training. Contact the training providers on the list to find out when and where courses are being offered. Remember to keep all your training records. You will need to submit proof of training when you apply to renew your certificate.

Complete 39 hours of on-the-job practical training

To reach a total of 39 hours, pick from the list of approved activities listed in Table C on the training requirements for drinking water operators page. Accepted activities for Class I – IV operators also count toward this requirement.

Meet operational experience requirements

You must have worked at least 3 months in the previous 36 months (3 years) as an operator in a limited groundwater or limited surface water subsystem, or gained experience that the Director considers as relevant.

Submit your renewal form

If you’ve met the above educational and training requirements, fill out and submit the renewal form with the required documentation and renewal fee to the Ontario Water Wastewater Certification Office.

Make sure you do this at least one month before your certificate expires and that you keep and attach all documents showing you’ve completed the required education and training.
