City/Town: Elgin County
Complete 2014
The historic Elgin County Courthouse and Land Registry Office are being combined to create the new St. Thomas Consolidated Courthouse.
The new courthouse is expected to be open in early 2014, and will feature:
- barrier-free access to courtrooms
- infrared hearing assistance
- barrier-free witness stands and jury boxes
The courthouse will accommodate both the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice in a single, modern facility.
The Elgin County Courthouse on Wellington Street has been a St. Thomas cultural landmark for more than 150 years. The renovation and expansion of the building will preserve its historical character, while ensuring it can continue to serve the community for many years to come.
The project demonstrates Ontario’s commitment to preserving heritage buildings through adaptive reuse, restoration and expansion.
As a part of the government’s commitment to energy conservation in Ontario, the new facility will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Silver standard, which focuses on energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments and reduced greenhouse emissions.
