Athletes’ Village

The 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games are accelerating the development of a new community on Toronto’s waterfront that will create jobs and stimulate economic growth in Ontario.

This environmentally sustainable community will offer Ontarians a range of housing, retail and recreational opportunities, as well as provide a temporary home-away-from-home for more than 10,000 athletes and officials participating in the 2015 Games.

A section of the West Don Lands community will be used as the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Athletes’ Village and is being developed by Waterfront Toronto in partnership with Infrastructure Ontario.

Both the 2009 Bid Book and the 2013 Ontario Budget indicated the Village was a separate investment by Ontario. Games-time use of the Athletes’ Village will only be a short time and then Torontonians will call it home for decades.

The Village is the cornerstone of the planned West Don Lands project, which will revitalize a long unused part of downtown Toronto. Hosting the Games accelerated the project by up to 15 years.

Following the Games, the Village will become a mixed-use community that includes affordable housing, a YMCA and George Brown College’s first student residence.

Costs

As host jurisdiction, Ontario invested an additional $709 million to build the village:

  • $514 million capital
  • $195 million site preparation and transaction costs

Status of construction

Currently, construction is nearly 80% complete, on time and on budget.
