The Ontario government is implementing payments to eligible optometrists to modernize the delivery of Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) insured optometry services.

This investment and the methodology for its distribution was mutually agreed to by the Ministry of Health (the ministry) and the Ontario Association of Optometrists (OAO).

As published in INFOBulletin 220409 on April 14, 2022 and INFOBulletin 220504 on May 30, 2022, the $45 million of funding supports enhanced delivery of OHIP-insured optometry care through modernizing technology, equipment, and patient management, scheduling and medical record software.

Implementing the payment to modernize OHIP Optometry Service delivery

The payment amount to individual optometrists is calculated based on the number of eligible applications received by the June 13, 2022 deadline.

The ministry is working to issue the modernization payments to eligible optometrists in August 2022.
Eligible optometrists who receive a solo Remittance Advice (RA) will see the payment reported under the accounting adjustment section.

Please note that due to a processing error, the payment will display the incorrect description text of “REPAYMENT OF AN ADVANCE"; however, this transaction is the Payment to Modernize OHIP Optometry Service Delivery.

Eligibility

Individual optometrists who applied by the June 13, 2022 deadline were assessed according to the following eligibility criteria:

  • They have rendered one or more insured OHIP optometry service(s) between April 1, 2020 – March 1, 2022, for which they have successfully submitted a claim for payment to OHIP by June 10, 2022.
