Submit a terminology request

You can use the terminology request form if you:

  • cannot find the official Ontario government name that you are looking for in the Official Names Ontario database
  • need to clarify the use of an official name
  • would like to request a service from the Terminology Unit

Before you submit

Before submitting a terminology request, translators should:

  1. Reach out to their client or contact person for the following information:
  • clarifications on the content (unclear text, unexplained acronyms)
  • keywords, short links, web addresses, URLs and Twitter handles or hashtags
  • document titles, including the titles of directives, operating policies and guidelines specific to a particular ministry or program area
  • bills that have not yet been tabled: Ask the client/contact person for the French title of the bill which can be provided by the ministry’s Legal Services Branch
  1. Ask the organization for official terminology specific to:
  • municipalities, colleges and universities, school boards, community care access centres (CCACs), hospitals and local health integration networks (LHINs)
  • federal, municipal or independent organizations
  1. Check e-Laws for legally binding technical terminology.

Translation vendors on the Vendor of Record (VOR) should not accept translation assignments that consist in their entirety of organization charts, business cards, letterheads, or standard signage.

Requesting official names

Translators can submit terminology requests for:

  • official government names and their abbreviations (including acronyms) which are not in the Official Names Ontario database
  • slogans
  • organization charts, business cards and letterheads
  • standard Ontario government signage that is not in the Lexicons Ontario database

    Note: A minimum of one business day is required for slogan translations.

    Translators should not search for French equivalents of official names online. Submit a terminology request if you cannot find the official Ontario government name you are looking for in the Official Names Ontario database.
