1. What is happening?

Effective June 17, 2024, ServiceOntario is excited to announce the pilot of digital certification functionality for Charge/Mortgage document types. This innovation marks a significant step forward in our commitment to modernize services for the people of Ontario.

2. Information

The new technology will certify documents using the ministry’s prescribed business rules. At this time, only Charge/Mortgage documents that do not have prior uncertified documents on the parcel(s) and meet the prescribed business rules will be digitally certified.

This concept will leverage the electronic land registration system to automatically verify information in receipted Charge/Mortgage documents and promptly confirm certification. By embracing automation, ServiceOntario aims to expedite the certification process to ensure faster service times for land registry customers.

Moreover, digital transformation has been designed to ensure the integrity of Ontario’s land registration records. While automation will play a pivotal role in processing these routine documents, land registration staff will continue to process all other documents that do not meet the criteria for digital certification. This change will allow ServiceOntario to dedicate more time for the review and certification of complex registrations.

With implementation of this new functionality, there are no changes to the customer experience with respect to the preparation or submission of Charge/Mortgage documents in Teraview. This process will be seamlessly integrated into the existing systems and records for both Teraview and OnLand.
