EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Explanatory Note was written as a reader’s aid to Bill 14 and does not form part of the law.  Bill 14 has been enacted as Chapter 19 of the Statutes of Ontario, 2001.

The purpose of the Bill is to promote awareness and detection of brain tumours by proclaiming October, in each year, to be Brain Tumour Awareness Month.

Preamble

Brain tumours are a devastating disease.  They strike people of all ages from newborns to seniors, cross all economic, social and ethnic boundaries and affect people in all walks of life. Brain tumours are the most common cause of solid cancer in children.

Early detection and treatment are vital for a person to survive brain tumours.  Brain tumour research, patient and family support services and awareness among the general public are essential to promote early detection and treatment of brain tumours.

Therefore, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

Brain Tumour Awareness Month

1. The month of October in each year is proclaimed Brain Tumour Awareness Month.

Commencement

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Brain Tumour Awareness Month Act, 2001.
