On the recommendation of the undersigned, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, by and with the advice and concurrence of the Executive Council of Ontario, orders that:

Whereas the Government of Ontario is committed to building the Province’s capacity to rapidly respond to the innovation challenges of the knowledge-based economy by increasing the use of science and evidence-based decision making to accelerate socio-economic growth;

Therefore, pursuant to the prerogative of Her Majesty The Queen in Right of Ontario to appoint advisors to serve Her Majesty’s Government of Ontario in the discharge of its executive obligations and responsibilities,

Special Advisor

The position of Special Advisor, Chief Scientist (“Chief Scientist”) is hereby established, effective January 4, 2018.

Terms of Reference

The Premier and the Minister of Research, Innovation and Science shall determine the terms of reference for the Chief Scientist and may amend them from time to time.

Appointment

The Lieutenant Governor in Council may appoint the Chief Scientist and this person shall serve at the pleasure of the Lieutenant Governor in Council for a period not exceeding three years from the effective date of the appointment.

Remuneration and Expenses

The Chief Scientist shall be paid such remuneration and shall be reimbursed for such expenses as the Lieutenant Governor in Council may determine.
