Project summary

The proposed work on the Griffith Quarry project is a bulk sampling program that will use diamond wire saws to cut blocks of material from bedrock for testing. To not qualify as advanced exploration, the bulk sample will be less than 1000 tonnes. The proposed area for the bulk sampling is accessible by truck.

The proponent is an individual who:

  • holds unpatented mining claims covering the project site
  • wants to test an area of dolomitic marble for the purpose of decorative stone and filler for industrial uses

The project is located in Griffith Township, located near the town of Eganville in southern Ontario.

The proponent holds a 100% interest in 12 contiguous single cell mining claims in Griffith Township, covering approximately 270 hectares.

The bulk sampling will be carried out by cutting blocks of marble from exposed outcrop and transported to testing facilities by truck. Any crushing required for the testing of the material will be done at the testing facility.

Statement of completion for a category B project (2024)

We have completed the project documentation for the proposed Griffith Quarry Bulk Sampling. The project is located in Griffith Township, Renfrew County, approximately 25 kilometres south of Eganville, Ontario.

The proposed work program on the Griffith Quarry project will consist of trenching for the purpose of a bulk sampling program. The bulk sample will be less than 1000 tonnes, keeping it below the threshold of advanced exploration. The site of the project is a location that is accessible by truck along pre-existing roads. It has previously been stripped and large blocks have been removed.

We assessed this undertaking as a Category B, in accordance with the Class Environmental Assessment for Activities of the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines under the Mining Act (PDF, amended 2018).

Consultation

We posted a Notice of Opportunity to Provide Input Bulletin Notice on the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO 019-8206) on January 31, 2024 and posted it on the Ministry of Mines Class EA webpage. We supported the notice and letters with a description of the project that included a summary of potential negative environmental effects associated with the undertaking and proposed mitigation measures that would negate or reduce the significance of the environmental effects. All parties consulted were provided opportunity to provide input and express concerns related to the project over a 30-day comment period.

We require permits for any in-water work or upgrades to roads. However, at this time, the proponent does not anticipate either of these activities. We advised that the proponent should be aware of a possibility of snapping turtles in the area and they should use caution especially during nesting season. The location of the project is in the Madawaska Highlands Land Use Plan (MHLUP) area and the proponent should review and follow the plan to its fullest while on site.

We did not receive other comments that would affect the project as it is currently planned. We will implement the project as described in the project documentation.
