Declaration Order
The Declaration Order approval date for the construction of the Sault Ste. Marie Detention Home for Young Offenders has been extended for a period of five years until December 20, 2010.
In 2000, this Declaration Order was approved to prevent any injury, damage or interference that would be caused by overcapacity and by the inadequate facilities at the existing detention home and to improve the conditions to accommodate the young offenders program objectives of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. One of these objectives is to allow the integration of young offenders in their community in partnership with the community without isolating them from their homes and families. At present, the young persons to be served by the facility are transported from Sault Ste. Marie to the Cecil Facer Youth Centre in Sudbury, Ontario.
Due to funding constraints, the construction of the Youth Detention Centre in Sault Ste. Marie was put on hold until this year. The present development schedule anticipates a tendering date of April 15, 2006 and a construction start date of June 1, 2006. The extension of the approval date of the Declaration Order will allow meeting these deadlines and prevent any further delays in the construction of the proposed undertaking.
The facility will be built on the same property at 521 Second Line East – Sault Ste. Marie as it was intended in 2000. The current version of this project is very similar to the design which was to be built at the time that the Declaration Order was issued except that the building area will increase from about 1,240 m2 to 1,890m2 to accommodate 16 residents instead of 10. In this one storey structure, there will be program spaces including classroom space, gymnasium and multi-purpose areas as well as outdoor activity spaces.
