Overview

All new security guards and private investigators must complete a basic training course.

Find a list of basic training providers, their location, telephone number and type of training they provide. The Ministry of the Solicitor General does not endorse nor recommend any trainer or training program. Interested applicants should do their own research when choosing a training provider.

Security guard and private investigator basic training may only be provided by:

  • community colleges
  • career colleges
  • licensed agencies
  • registered employers
  • public universities

Some businesses that employ their own security guards or private investigators offer them basic training directly. Employers can only provide this training to their own employees and prospective employees. Find a list of registered organizations below.

Become a basic training provider

To become a training provider, organizations should ensure that their training is in compliance with the training and testing regulation and training syllabi for security guards and private investigators under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act.

Organizations must be enrolled on the Training Registration Venue (TRV) with Serco Canada Inc. by completing the following steps:

  1. Create an account on the TRV with Serco Canada Inc. and submit a request to enroll by providing the required information.
  2. Once the request to enroll has been received, the Ministry of the Solicitor General will notify you. The ministry will review all training materials to make sure it meets the minimum requirements under the training and testing regulation.
  3. If the enrollment has been approved by the ministry, you will be provided access in the TRV to upload the required candidate information for each student. This will confirm that students have completed all training requirements to allow for testing and licensure as a security guard or private investigator.
