Current status
On February 15, 2024, the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, with cabinet concurrence approved the St. Marys Future Solid Waste Disposal Needs environmental assessment project.
Project summary
The Town of St. Marys (town) has been granted approval under the Environmental Assessment Act to add 708,000 cubic metres (m3) of waste disposal capacity to the St. Marys landfill. This will allow the town to continue providing post-diversion municipal solid waste disposal services to St. Marys’ residents and its industrial, commercial and institutional sector until 2056.

Amended environmental assessment
The town submitted the St. Marys Future Solid Waste Disposal Needs environmental assessment for review and decision under the Environmental Assessment Act in August 2021.
In response to the comments received, the town conducted additional field studies and a new preferred alternative was identified. An amended environmental assessment was subsequently submitted to the ministry in November 2022.
After considering the environmental assessment, comments received and the proponent’s proposed environmental protection measures, the minister, with cabinet concurrence, approved the undertaking as described in the environmental assessment for the St. Marys Future Solid Waste Disposal Needs project on February 15, 2024.
The town may now proceed with implementing the project, subject to the conditions in the notice of approval and any other permits and approvals that may be required.
