In April 2019, we lost a dear colleague and friend, Dr. John Fernandes, after a brief illness.

A graduate of McGill medical school, John began his career as an OBGYN in the 1980s.  In 2002, he completed his Forensic Pathology training and began a new career in Hamilton eventually becoming the Director of the Hamilton Forensic Pathology Unit and an original member of the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.  His vision, commitment and dedication to Forensic Pathology was steadfast and unwavering.  John was a founder of the Forensic Pathology discipline as designated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.  He played an integral role in growing the profession as director of the residency training program at McMaster University.

In addition, John was a valued and respected staff member of both Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton where he was the Chief of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program.  He was also Professor of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

John was a well-respected member of the medicolegal system and always a valued member of the death investigation team.  His presence, generosity and compassion are missed by everyone who worked with him.
