Service objectives

  • Strengthen service delivery and service system planning, through partnership development and collaboration with other community organizations to provide effective crisis and community supports;
  • Reduce geographic and transportation barriers to improve access to violence against women (VAW) services and safe spaces;
  • Provide access to emergency funds for VAW service providers to utilize for a VAW-related tragedy or incident; and
  • Support innovative models of service delivery to respond to the unique challenges of providing services and supports to women in/from rural and remote communities.

Service Description

  • The purpose of the Rural & Remote (R&R) Supports and Services is to improve access to supports and healing services for women and their dependents experiencing or at-risk of experiencing violence in/from rural and remote communities.
  • R&R seeks to improve the capacity of VAW service providers to effectively respond to the unique needs of women and their dependents in/from rural and remote communities.
  • For the purpose of this services rural and remote communities are defined as those communities that have limited local services, are far from urban centres, and/or are without year-round road access. In addition, rural and remote communities tend to exist in geographic areas where there is relatively low population density or limited access to services.

People Served

  • Women and their dependents from rural and remote communities under the following programs:
  • VAW Emergency Shelter and Supports
  • VAW Counselling

Specific service provided may include

Individual-Specific Services Can Include

  • Intake/Individual Assessment or Comprehensive Assessment
  • Transportation supports
  • Cellular services
  • Trauma-based interventions and programs, crisis support
  • Safety Planning
  • Individual case management/system navigation support and advocacy for other services in the community (e.g., mental health, legal)
  • Mobile supports/services (e.g., services brought directly to client in their community, such as a mobile transportation unit)

Group activities Can Include

  • Counselling in groups
  • Community/group-based cultural activities (e.g., land-based activities)

Capacity Building and Partnerships/Collaboration to Strengthen Service Delivery

  • Training for frontline staff
  • Protocols/collaborative agreements or community action plans developed
  • Capacity-building and knowledge transfer (e.g., conferences, workshops)
  • Outreach and advocacy activities (e.g., campaigns, school presentations, resources)

Services Excluded

Expenditures not directly related to the delivery of violence against women services and supports for women in/from rural and remote communities.

  • Capital expenditures with the exception of technology to improve accessibility of violence against women services/supports
  • Purchase of transportation vehicles
  • Major/minor repairs and maintenance not associated with the delivery of rural and remote supports
  • Operating funds for unfunded shelters beds
  • Costs covered by another ministry program
  • Annual general meetings, budget deficits, membership fees
  • Fundraising activities, committee and political meetings, or religious activities Wage enhancements/premiums, hazard pay, etc.

Program Goals

  • To enhance the capacity of VAW service providers in rural and remote communities to provide crisis and community supports; and
  • To improve access to services for women in/from rural and remote communities who have experienced violence or are at-risk of experiencing violence and face particular challenges in accessing supports in their communities.

Ministry expectations

  • More women in/from rural and remote communities have access to the crisis and community supports they need.
  • Enhanced capacity of the VAW sector to provide community supports following a VAW-related tragedy or incident in a rural or remote community.
  • Increased community awareness of VAW program/services/supports in rural and remote communities.
  • Greater collaboration and coordination of VAW services to address the unique needs of women in/from rural and remote communities.

# of Individuals: Received Individual-Specific Services: Rural and Remote Services and Supports

Unique, or unduplicated, count of individuals who received 1-on-1 individual-specific services through Rural and Remote Services and Supports during the reporting period.

Each unique individual is counted only once per reporting period even if they received multiple services. If the individual carries into the next fiscal year, the client is counted again in the new reporting period.

Examples of individual-specific activities include the following:

  • Intake/Individual Assessment or Comprehensive Assessment
  • Transportation supports
  • Cellular services
  • Trauma-based interventions and programs, crisis support
  • Safety Planning
  • Individual case management/system navigation support and advocacy for other services in the community (e.g., mental health, legal)
  • Mobile supports/services (e.g., services brought directly to client in their community, such as a mobile transportation unit)

 

# of Group Activities: Rural and Remote Services and Supports

The total number of group activities delivered through Rural and Remote Services and Supports program during the reporting period. Each activity held in the reporting period should be counted as 1. If a group activity is jointly organized/funded with another agency receiving Rural and Remote Services and Supports funding, then both agencies should report the group activity.  If group activities are not provided through this program, put “0”. 
Examples of Group activities include the following:

  • Counselling in groups
  • Community/group-based cultural activities (e.g., land-based activities)
# of Capacity Building and Collaboration activities: Rural and Remote Services and SupportsThe total number of capacity building and collaboration/partnerships activities delivered through Rural and Remote Services and Supports during the reporting period. Each activity should be counted as 1. If capacity building and collaboration/ partnerships activities are not provided through this program, put “0”.
Ministry-funded Agency Expenditures: Rural and Remote Services and SupportsTotal ministry-funded expenses for the Transfer Payment Recipient to administer and/or deliver this program in the reporting year (cumulative).
